Using an old friend (Escort RS2000), I have been experimenting with using the Mental Ray Production Shaders in 3ds Max to place a model into a photographic background. This scene was setup and rendered in 3ds Max 2009 - direct output shown here, no post processing. It uses MR matte and environment switchers, one spot light and one skylight (using the HDRI Env map I created).

I was lucky to capture the low evening sun. You can see the environment map 360 here: http://www.dmmultimedia.com/carpark/NagraCarPark_01.html

I am creating a tutorial where I will explain in depth how to create this scene (including maps), presently I have the first part on general use of MR Production shaders on my website here : http://www.dmmultimedia.com/3dtips_11.htm

http://www.dmmultimedia.com/3dtips_09.htm - This tutorial shows a "quick & dirty" method of creating Tyres using a "low poly" mesh.

It is not meant to be the most detailed or accurate method (there are other tutorials on the internet that outline detailed tyre creation with all the little subtle bumps and indents - excellent for closeups) but the method outlined here will create a tyre that will be more than realistic enough for most shots - but using a LOT less polys than a Mesh/Turbosmoothed mesh.

The same method, of creating a small repeating pattern and applying symmetry can be used for almost any tyre

Daleks: Return to the past

This scene takes the Dalek model (Dr. Who's arch nemesis from the popular BBC Science Fiction TV series running for last 40 years) and places them into an environment.

I have previously placed the Daleks in a more familiar, or expected, modern Sci-fi environment - but this time wanted to juxtapose them with an ancient, natural, analogue world.

Keeping the camera low, the Daleks are lurking in the shade .. with one just entering in the strong sunlight, the sun glinting off the alloy casing. I was trying to create the atmosphere of an old temple - something quite new to me, this is my first interior/architectural rendering

The scene was setup in Max2008 with Mental ray, using only 4 Portal Lights and almost exclusivley Arch & Design materials. mr Photgraphic exposure was used for tone mapping and the Glare modifier added to camera output.

This is basically the direct output from Max, no post processing - only a border and tag added.

The model development can be seen in this thread :

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=43&t=521017

A great big thanks for all the crits of the expert modellers who build Daleks in the real world - found on: http://www.projectdalek.com

Escort Mk1 Rs2000 Revisited

I was playing around with the settings on this old model that I created in 3D Max ... and tried a nice gloss black finish. I liked it so I am posting it here. Trying for a Sudio effect with diffused soft lighting.
Still working on my Escort MK2 model - but keep getting drawn back to the old original MK1
Pushing Studio 3D Max with Mental Ray to produce these results - trying to get high resolutions has caused problems. Now got the image rendered at 4000x3000 I want to produce a large poster for myself.

Hi,
I started to create this model to test and hone my car modelling skills and texturing in 3ds max, but it has turned out to be a labour of love
I wanted to try something that I have not seen modelled before. I have tried to model as accurately as possible - and have been in touch with many owners' groups, and working closely with them to get all the minutae right.
Some feedback from the WiP forums on cars seems to focus on "does the car have an interior?" or "It will look good in an environment". So I have created both the interior and the engine bay, and an environment.
In fact, I actually enjoyed creating this car so much that I am now the owner of a White/blue RS2000 myself
